Studied at Louth Grammar School. Glasgow High School and University. Durham Grammar School.
Christ’s College Cambridge, of which he became Fellow and Assistant Tutor, and is now Honourable. Master of Arts.
Fellow; Assistant Master at Marlborough College under Doctor Bradley, 1860-1863. Examiner in English at the University of London, 1881-1886, 1889-1894, and 1897- 1903. Also University of New Zealand several years.
Also the University of Wales. Also for Medieval and Modern Language Tripos, University of Cambridge. Fellow of King’s College, London, 1902.
Clark Lecturer on English Literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, 1889 - 93. General editor of Messrs. Bell’s Series of Handbooks of English Literature. Emeritus Professor of English Literature, King’s College, London (retired 1903).
