Background

Roper, John Wesley was born on May 31, 1898 in near Gibson, North Carolina, United States. Son of Daniel Calhoun and Lou (McKenzie) Roper.

Education

Student United States Naval Academy, 1915-1918.

Career

1 daughter, Margaret. Commissioned ensign United States Navy, 1918, advanced through grades to vice admiral, 1945. On destroyer Roe, based at Brest, France, 1918.

Served in United States Ship Chicago on staff commander South Pacific, and as commanding officer United States Ship Wisconsin, World World War II. Later commander amphibious group, duty in Bureau Naval Personnel. Appointed chief bureau of Naval Personnel and chief Naval Personnel in Department Navy, for term of 4 years, 1949.

Commander Cruiser, Destroyer Force, Pacific Fleet, 1951. Commandant 11th Naval District, 1952. Retired May 1, 1953, vice admiral.
