Background

Poe, John William was born on October 17, 1850 in Mason Company, Kentucky, United States. Son of Nathan and Louisa (Harber) Poe.

Education

Left home at 18; worked at farming and railway constructor in Missouri and Kansas, later working on United States Government contracts at Fort Griffin, Texas City marshal Fort Griffin, 1878-1879. Later deputy sheriff and deputy United States marshal in northwest Texas and eastern New Mexico. Elected sheriff of Lincoln Company, New Mexico, 1882, 84.

Member Territorial Board of Equalization by appointment of Governor Otero, 1889-1890. Member and president State Tax Commission, 1915-1917 (resigned). Identified with banking business, since 1890.

President Citizens National Bank of Roswell and First National Bank of Artesia, also director several other banks in the Pecos Valley. Federal fuel administrator for New Mexico, during part of World War.

Career

Was ranchman and agriculturist during part of earlier life.
