John Williams Gunnison, American army officer, engineer.
Gunnison, John Williams was born on November 11, 1812 in Goshen, New Hampshire, United States. Son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Williams) Gunnison.
Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1837.
Served with 2d Artillery as Second lieutenant in Seminole War, 1837-1838. Aided transfer of Cherokees to Indian Territory, 1838. Participated in surveys in Georgia and lake region of Northwest, 1840-1849.
Spent winter in Salt Lake City, made study of Mormon religion. Commissioned captain, 1853, assigned to survey Huerfano River, Cochetopa Pass and Grand and Green valleys to Santa Clara in S.W. Utah, expedition attacked by band of Pahvant Indians. Author: The Mormons, 1852.
