Duke, John Woods was born on July 30, 1899 in Cumberland, Maryland, United States. Son of Harry Kearney and Matilda Adina (Hoffman) Duke.

Education

Teacher’s certificate, Peabody Cons. of Music, Baltimore, 1918. Diploma Allegany County Academy, Cumberland, 1915.

Career

Began as teacher piano, Smith College, 1923, professor music from 1938. Spent sabbatical year in Europe, 1929-1930. Has appeared in many concerts and recitals, giving 1st performances of contemporary works.

Compositions have been performed in concerts in New York, Boston and various other cities in the East.
