Joko III Sewaga was born in 1807.
At first he was a draper who wrote plays in his spare hours. Namboku Tsuruya V, playwright, revised his plays and made him a full-fledged playwright.
He became the head playwright of the Edoza Theater (1848) and assumed the name of Joko. His plays were overmeticulous and actors had difficulty in remembering their long lines. In his late years, he was head playwright of the Hisamatsuza Theater.
