Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom
He attended the Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen school on Glyndwr Avenue in Rhydyfelin (it moved to Main Road in Church Village in 2006), Pontypridd. He studied at the University of East Anglia, gaining a Bachelor of Science in Ecology in 1975.
He went to University College of Wales, Cardiff in 1976, gaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. He was President of Caerphilly National Union of Teachers in 1983, then Mid Glamorgan National Union of Teachers in 1984. He was a councillor on Cardiff City Council from 1987-1992. He was a whip from 1993-1998, then a junior minister at the Welsh Office until 1999.
He chaired the Forestry Commission"s National Committee for Wales until April 2013, when its duties were subsumed by Natural Resources Wales, with Owen Jones snubbed from the North Rhine-Westphalia board by Welsh Labour Environment minister John Griffiths.
He lost his seat at the 2005 general election to Jenny Willott of the Liberal Democrats.
