( Growing Civil Society investigates the role of voluntar...)
Growing Civil Society investigates the role of voluntary action and nonprofit organization in contemporary America. Key to the book is the concept of "third space," which provides an important tool for the construction of civil society. The third space is not independent from society's major institutions, but exists in dynamic interdependence with them, linking individuals in their home bases of family and community to the larger governmental and economic structures within which all citizens, workers, and consumers learn to find their way in modern society.

(Voluntary action is a process whose diverse nature makes ...)
Voluntary action is a process whose diverse nature makes it hard to put your finger on the sum of its effects, observes social scientist Jon Van Til. But that is precisely what Professor Van Til undertakes in this scholarly new work which sets the stage for a coherent view of the voluntary sector. The enormous impact of the voluntary sector appears with greater clarity as Van Til views voluntary action through its interrelationships with other institutional sectors of our society, those of business and government. In Mapping the Third Sector, Van Til states the need for new conceptions of the sector that emphasize its central role in contemporary society. Van Til begins mapping the sector by presenting the prevailing images of voluntary action along with a glossary of terms for its comprehension. He next identifies a variety of perspectives from which the world of voluntary action may be approached, all the while stating the need of a social/economic climate in which principles of voluntarism are widely practiced and voluntary associations thrive. His review of historical and contemporary models of voluntary action paves the way for one that does not rely solely on a sectoral view of society, but, instead, stresses the need for a new conception of how to preserve, extend, and experience community within the interactive web of modern society. Mapping the Third Sector serves as an important starting point for students and scholars studying the field as well as for practitioners in the areas of volunteer administrative/development, philanthropic management, and fund-raising. The lengthy reference list serves as an extensive bibliography to facilitate further study.
