Jonathan Aberman was born in the United States.
In 1979, Jonathan entered the George Washington University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Economics in 1983. Between 1983 and 1984, Aberman attended the London School of Economics, where he received a Master of Science degree.
In 1985, Jonathan enrolled at the University of Cambridge in England, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law in 1987. In 1989, Aberman went on to study at New York University, graduating with a Master of Laws degree in 1990. Moreover, in 1993, he obtained a Master of Arts degree in Law from the University of Cambridge in England.
In 1998, Jonathan began working as managing partner of Northern Virginia Office, member of the Executive Committee and venture capital lawyer at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, remaining there until 2001. In 2001, he moved to Fenwick & West LLP, where he held a post of a venture capital attorney and that of managing partner of 25 lawyer office for Silicon Valley-based technology law firm until 2003.
Since March 2005, Aberman has been acting as Managing Director at Amplifier Ventures. From July 2006 till June 2019, Jonathan served as a lecturer of Entrepreneurship at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, College Park. During that period, he developed and taught courses in entrepreneurship, business formation, strategic growth, organizational development, family entrepreneurship and business policies.
From 2011 till December 2017, Aberman served as chair at FounderCorps, a regional nonprofit organization, that focuses on entrepreneurial development and regional startup acceleration in the Washington, D.C. region. Also, in 2011, Jonathan founded Startup Virginia, Startup Maryland and Startup DC as part of the Obama Administration's Startup America Initiative. These efforts resulted in the formation of regionally impactful programs, including 1776 Accelerator and the I-Corps program.
Beginning in September 2012 till September 2015, Aberman worked as a co-host at Leftjab Radio. Since January 2014, Jonathan has been Chairman and Managing Director at TandemNSI in Arlington, Virginia. From September 2015 till January 2017, he held a post of a host at Forward Thinking Radio. During the period from October 2015 till March 2017, Aberman worked as a columnist for Capital Business at The Washington Post, writing about the intersection of innovation, entrepreneurship and policy on a local and national level.
Since January 2017, Jonathan has been working as a host at "What's Working in Washington", a weekly radio program and podcast, that highlights the intersection of innovation, entrepreneurship and policy in one of the least understood, but interesting business communities in the United States. In 2018, he formed the Tandem Product Academy, an educational program, focused on teaching founders and senior executives essential skills, necessary to scale technology product-based businesses. In 2019, Jonathan was appointed the Interim Dean at the Marymount University School of Business and Technology in Arlington, Virginia, a post he still holds.
Throughout his career, Jonathan has also been an innovation policy adviser to a number of political campaigns. In addition, he has worked with a broad range of national security agencies and universities on the issue of melding the national security and entrepreneurship with technology commercialization.
In addition, Aberman has acted as a policy adviser to state and federal government. As a founder of TandemNSI, Aberman has helped national security entities, such as Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), among others, locate and engage with non-traditional sources of innovation.
Moreover, Jonathan is also an active and regular participant on panels, involving innovation, entrepreneurship and technology, as well as a keynote speaker at similar events.
