Jonathan Angell is an Australian lawyer who worked as a partner of the Melbourne-based firm Phillips Fox. He studied at the University of Melbourne and was admitted to the bar in Victoria in 1985. Phillips Fox operated under that name from 1985 to 2006 and was described as the first national law firm in Australia.
Education
Angell's documented university education is at the University of Melbourne, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws. The university was established by an act of the Parliament of Victoria on 22 January 1853, during the prosperity of the gold rush, with power to confer degrees in arts, medicine, laws and music. A law school was added in 1857, reflecting the colonial preference for practical subjects such as law.
The main campus is at Parkville, north of Melbourne's central business district. The university is Australia's second-oldest and the oldest in the state of Victoria, which makes it the principal historic setting for Angell's legal education in Melbourne.
Career
Angell was admitted to the bar in Victoria in 1985, and his professional record identifies him as a partner of Phillips Fox in Melbourne.
The Phillips Fox name derived from an established Melbourne practice, Phillips Fox & Masel, which had close agency relationships with other firms before a series of amalgamations produced a national firm. The firm operated under the collective name Phillips Fox from 1985 to 2006 and was described as the first national law firm in Australia. Its growth included the 1998 merger with Majteles Salmon and the 1999 arrival of the insolvency practice of Hely Edgar.
In 2011 the Australian practice was absorbed by the global firm DLA Piper, which opened for business in Australia under that name and ended the Phillips Fox name.
