He is currently the Chief Executive Officer and executive director of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. as well as Visiting Alger Hiss Professor of History and Literature at Bard College. Jonathan Brent was born in 1949 to bookstore-owning parents Stuart and Jeanette Brent. Jeanette died in 1954.
He received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University, and an Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in English literature from the University of Chicago.
He served as editorial director of the Yale University Press from 1991-2009. Brent also founded the literary magazine, Formations.
He has taught courses in history and literature as a visiting Alger Hiss Professor of History and Literature at Bard College since 2004. In 2009, YIVO named him its executive director and Chief Executive Officer.
As a publisher, he is the director of the Annals of Communism series, which he founded in 1992.
