Jonathan (Borwick) Freedman was born on April 11, 1950, in Rochester, New York, United States. He is the son of Marshall Arthur and Betty (Borwick) Freedman.
Freedman attended Columbia College and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from it in 1972.
Freedman started his career as an associated Press reporter in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro from 1974 to 1975. Six years later he worked as an editorial writer till 1990 in Tribune. During that period of time he also was a syndicated columnist in Copley News Service from 1987 to 1990. That same years he became a freelance opinion and editorial writer at the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. Since 1987 his freelance articles have appeared in many prominent newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and the Chicago Tribune.
In the 1980s editorial writing became Freedman's predominant work. Freedman is the author of both a children’s story and a well-received non-fiction volume, From Cradle to Grave: The Human Face of Poverty in America. His juvenile fiction work, The Man Who’d Bounce the World, concerns a protagonist who gave away all of his money on the streets of Harlem in New York City.
