Schooled at King"s School, Chester he then studied at Jesus College, Oxford, completing a Bachelor of Arts (Bachelor) degree in Philosophy and Politics. His Bachelor was later promoted to Master of Arts (Oxfordshire) as per tradition.
He is the current and first Bishop of Huddersfield, a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. He undertook postgraduate research at Jesus College, Cambridge, completing a Doctor of Philosophy (Doctor of Philosophy) degree in 1990. He underwent ministry formation at Ridley Hall, Cambridge.
He was ordained deacon in 1989 and priest in 1990.
His first post was a curacy at Stalybridge, after which he was the Chaplain at Basle from 1992 until 1998. He was then the incumbent at Heswall from 1998 until his elevation to the episcopate.
