Jonathan received his bachelor"s degree in Japanese from Brigham Young University in 1990. In 1993, Jonathan graduated with a law degree from J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University. Following graduation, Jonathan worked as a Judicial Clerk for Utah Supreme Court Justice Leonard H. Russon. In 1999, Johnson moved back to Utah to work for a publicly traded software company TenFold Corporation. Johnson worked at TenFold until 2002 when he was hired by Overstock.com to be general counsel Jonathan has been with the Overstock.com since 2002. Jonathan is currently chairman of the board at Overstock. Jonathan, a Republican, formally announced on August 15, 2015 at the Republican state Grand Old Party convention his run for governor against fellow Republican Government.
