Jonathan Keates is a British biographer, writer, educator and journalist. He is currently a Chairman of the Venice in Peril Fund, Trustee of the London Library and a regular contributor to a number of newspapers and journals, including The Observer and the Times Literary Supplement.

Jonathan Keates was born in Paris, France in 1946.

Education

Keates received his education at Bryanston School and Magdalen College, Oxford.

Career

Keates started his career as a travel and short story writer. In 1974, he became an English teacher employed by the City of London School and worked there till his retirement in 2013. During that time, he was also a judge of several writing competitions.

Keates retired in order to focus on his chairmanship of the Venice in Peril Fund, where he currently holds the position of a chairman. He also writes reviews in some prominent magazines and newspapers, including The Observer and the Times Literary Supplement, and is a Trustee of the London Library.

Achievements

  • Jonathan Keates is best known as the author of several works of fiction including the short story collection Allegro Postillions and the novel The Stranger's Gallery. He is also the biographer of Handel, Purcell, and Stendhal, and is well known as a reviewer and writer on Italian culture and history.
