He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in 1989 at the University of Bristol under the supervision of Michael Berry.

He is currently a Professor at the University of Bristol. His research is on quantum chaos, random matrix theory and its connection to the Riemannian zeta function and other zeta functions. Since 2009, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society.
In 2010, he was awarded the Fröhlich Prize.
In 2014, he was awarded the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award. Nina Snaith was one of his doctoral students.
