Nitschke was born on March 17, 1973 in Syracuse, New York, United States; the son of Ian Nitschke and Walda Metcalf.
Nitschke received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Williams College in 1995. Six years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California.
Nitschke began his career as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Strasbourg in 2001. Two years later he took a position of an assistant professor of the department of organic chemistry at the University of Geneva. Since 2007 Jonathan is a professor of the department of chemistry at the University of Cambridge.
