Jonathan Harry Schlosberg is a South African lawyer and partner of Bowman Gilfillan, the Johannesburg law firm now known as Bowmans. He is known for corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, and banking and finance work, including the advice his team gave Standard Bank on a major foreign investment in the bank.
Background
Schlosberg's education and professional life developed in Johannesburg, a city founded after gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand in the 1880s that grew into South Africa's principal commercial and financial centre. Johannesburg's concentration of mining houses, banks and corporations made it the main setting for corporate and commercial legal work in the country.
Education
Schlosberg studied at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, where he completed a Bachelor of Commerce in 1975 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1976. Founded in 1922, the university traces its roots to the South African School of Mines, and its location on the Witwatersrand gold reef tied its teaching to the mining and commercial economy of the region.
He later completed a Higher Diploma in Income Tax at the same university. His later practice covered corporate, commercial, taxation, real estate and deceased estates law.
Career
Schlosberg's career has been associated with Bowman Gilfillan, a Johannesburg law practice whose origins go back to 1893, when Douglas Gilfillan founded a law firm in the city. The Bowman Gilfillan Hayman Godfrey firm, established in 1902, was one of three practices that merged in 1998 to form Bowman Gilfillan, which later became known as Bowmans.
He joined the firm as a director in 1979 and later became a partner. He subsequently served as chairman of the firm and headed its Corporate Department, with a practice focused on mergers and acquisitions, corporate law, banking and finance, corporate governance, capital markets and securities law. A later firm profile describes him as a senior consultant in the Johannesburg office's Corporate Department.
His work reflects the growth of South African corporate practice in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, when large cross-border investment, capital market activity and empowerment transactions increasingly shaped the work of major commercial law firms in Johannesburg.
Achievements
Schlosberg led the firm's team advising Standard Bank on the sale of a 20 per cent interest to Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. The transaction was described as the largest direct foreign investment into South Africa up to that point.
Membership
Schlosberg has served on the board of patrons of AIESEC South Africa, the national branch of an international student-run organisation that offers young people leadership development and international exchange opportunities. He has also sat on the board of governors of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Junior and Mini City Council, a youth civic programme in Johannesburg that gives young people practical experience of municipal government.
