Sutherland was born in Brae, a large settlement on the Shetland Islands. He left the islands to study politics at Aberdeen University and subsequently graduated with his degree in 1999. Following his graduation, Sutherland was encouraged to write to the Island"s media for work.
He soon landed a job at British Broadcasting Corporation Radio Shetland.
He also occasionally hosts the Sportscene results show on Saturday afternoons and presents the sports segment for Reporting Scotland. He also currently presents Scotland 2014, a current affairs programme alongside Sarah Smith on Thursday evenings. His first taste of journalism was with Radio Shetland but left in 2003 to build his career.
He soon landed a job at British Broadcasting Corporation Sport as a broadcast journalist.
He then left the British Broadcasting Corporation for Shetland Weekly but returned soon after. He then landed the job of assistant producer of Sportscene.
He now is the main presenter of the Sunday night SPFL highlights show, Sportscene. Sutherland also presented Keeping Loch Lomond, a conservation show which discovers how the National Park authority deals with developing whilst conserving the Loch Lomond area.
Sutherland can also be seen presenting the sports segment for Reporting Scotland as a back-up to David Currie.
He is one of two Shetlanders working for British Broadcasting Corporation Scotland"s sport, the other being Philosophy Goodlad, who is from Yell. He is also set to co-present a new current affairs program for British Broadcasting Corporation Two. Scotland 2014 will be broadcast in June 2014.
