Jonathan Baert Wiener was born on August 29, 1962, in White Plains, New York, United States. He is a son of Anthony J. Wiener, a professor of business, and Helga Susanna (Gerschenkron) Wiener, a psychologist.
In 1984, Jonathan received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Harvard University. Later, in 1987, he got a Juris Doctor degree from the same university.
During his student years, Wiener also acted as an editor of the Harvard Law Review and assistant coach of the 1985 college debate champions.
Between 1987 and 1988, Jonathan served as a law clerk to the federal judge Jack B. Weinstein. From 1988 till 1989, he held the same position, serving to Stephen Breyer. During the period from 1989 till 1991, Wiener worked as a special assistant in Environment Division at the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. During that time, namely in 1990, Wiener helped to draft the first IPCC report, helped to negotiate the Framework Convention on Climate Change and attended the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.
In 1992, Jonathan worked as a policy counsel at White House Office of Science and Technology Policy in Washington, D.C. Between 1992 and 1993, he acted as a senior staff economist at White House Council of Economic Advisers, also in Washington, D.C. In 1993, he helped to draft the Executive Order 12866 on Regulatory Review. The same year, Professor Wiener also helped to organize the Americorps National Service program.
In 1994, Jonathan joined Duke University School of Law as an associate professor of law, a post he held till 1999, when he was promoted to the post of a full professor. Between 1994 and 1998, Wiener was a member of North Carolina State Commission on National and Community Service. In 1995, he organized the "Dedicated to Durham" community service day, held twice each year at Duke Law School.
From 2000 till 2005, Jonathan was a founding faculty director of the Duke Center for Environmental Solutions, now expanded into the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, of which he chaired the faculty advisory committee from 2007 till 2010. In 2004, Wiener was named to his current position as the William R. and Thomas L. Perkins Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law.
Between 2007 and 2015, he served as a director of the JD/LLM Program in International and Comparative Law at Duke University School of Law. In 2008, Jonathan held a post of a President of the international Society for Risk Analysis (SRA), becoming the first law professor or lawyer to hold this post. In 2012, he co-chaired the SRA's World Congress on Risk in Sydney, Australia. Since 2015, Wiener has also been working as a co-director of the Rethinking Regulation Program at Duke University.
Moreover, Jonathan is a member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the International Risk Governance Council (IRGC) and of the scientific committee of the Chaire Économie du Climat (CEC). In 2015, he was a member of the Special Policy Study team on "Environmental Risk Management" for the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED). In 2014-2016, Wiener was a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Climate Change.
During his career, Jonathan also held a post of a visiting professor, working at different educational establishments, including the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences and Centre International de Recherche sur l'Environnement et le Développement in Paris (2005-2006), the University of Chicago Law School (2007), Sciences Po (2008), Harvard Law School (1999 and 2010), Université Paris-Dauphine (2010 and 2011) and Paris Nanterre University (2014). He has taught courses on Environmental Law, Risk Regulation, Retrospective Regulatory Review, Climate Change Law, the UN Climate Negotiations, Law of the Atmosphere, International Environmental Law, Mass Torts, Property Law, Global Property Regimes and Happiness & Decisions.
In addition, Jonathan has authored and co-authored several works on the United States, European and international environmental law and risk regulation.
Currently, besides working as a William R. and Thomas L. Perkins Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law, Wiener also serves as a Professor of Environmental Policy at the Nicholas School of the Environment and Professor of Public Policy at the Sanford School of Public Policy, at Duke University.

2003Jonathan married Ginger Young, a director of social services, on October 31, 1991. Their marriage produced two children — Alexander Baert Young and Caleb Baert Young.
