Captain 1st Maine Cavalry, October 19, 1861. Major, May 15, 1862; lieutenant colonel, July 1, 1864. Honorary mustered out, August, 1865.

Bvtd.: colonel vols., March 13, 1865, “for gallant and meritorious services during the war”. Brigadier general vols., June 12, 1865, for same. In practice, Rockland, Maine, since 1865.

Member House of Representatives, 1867. United States court commissioner, 1867-1880. Adjutant general of Maine, 1876-1878.
