After working first as carpenter, turned his attention to drafting and design. At the age of twenty-eight Goldsmith left for Ohio and began to build houses in Willoughby, Mentor and Cleveland, subsequently settled in Painesville where he spent the rest of his life. A skilled designer in the Greek Revival style, he did his finest work in that city, Among the distinguished houses which still survive is the Doctor Mathews residence on North Main Street, built in 1831. Also attributed to' him is St. James Episcopal Church and the old Gauega Bank, remodelled later for the Painesville Bank, which stood until 1925
