Banach belonged to a generation of Cuban 'utellectuals who founded the review Avance in ‘927. He is best known for his highly regarded lography of José Marti. His early work on the ‘oteo, a term he defined as ‘a strong urge for ‘^dependence which becomes externalized in a J°ke which is completely destructive of authority’, a combination of phenomenology and cultural 'story which seeks to analyse the Cuban national essence.
Manach undertakes a ‘réévaluation of lngs formerly considered trivial or ridiculous’ ?n<? Seeks to discover ‘the significance of the lns'gnificant'. Like other thinkers of the Avance generation Manach initially supported Fidel aslro but was later exiled from Cuba for his Cr'ticism of the regime.
