Capuletti was born in Valladolid, Spain, on March 21, 1925. He was the son of Juan Antonio Capuletti Raposo and Juana Lillo del Pozo García.
José Manuel Capuletti became fascinated with art in an early childhood. He made his first drawing efforts when he was only five years old. In 1936, at age 11 José Manuel was sent to an art academy in Valladolid.
In June 1938 he enrolled in the Institute Jose Zorrila of Valladolid, where he would stay until 1939. This year he transferred to Hermanos de la Salle in Colegio de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes in Valladolid, graduating from it in 1940.
Capuletti held his first group exhibition in September 1941 in Valladolid together with Agrupación de Artistas Castellanos. In 1946 he had his first important solo show. From January 24 to February 4 he was joined by Francisco Sabadell, when the exhibition moved to the hall of Colegio de Santa Cruz in Valladolid.
Capuletti's artworks systematically reflected positive human values, even when he juxtaposed inconsistent elements in fantastic or dramatic scenes. His subjects ranged from sensual female nudes, vibrant young lovers, and teenage girls, to flamenco musicians, bullfighters, and introspective self-portraits, and also landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes.
In 1947 José Capuletti moved to Madrid and lived for a few months there. In Madrid, he worked for the Spanish ballet group of Pilar López. The following year he started to work for the ballet group of dancer José Greco.
For the first time in his life, Capuletti travelled to such foreign countries as France, Sweden, Northern Germany, Belgium, Holland, Finland, and Denmark in 1950, serving as a stage decoration designer with Greco's ballet group. He had a great opportunity to visit numerous museums in Belgium and Holland, where he studied the artworks of Vermeer (his favorite), Margritte and Paul Delvaux.
In Paris, José Capuletti met and became friends with a dancer of Greco's group, María del Pilar López Fernández from Madrid. The artist ceased his international tour after a car accident in Denmark and decided to return to Spain.
Capuletti left for Paris on April 12, 1951. The same year he moved with his family to a new apartment at Rue Bassano #11 in the neighbourhood of the Champs d'Elysees.
José Capuletti was a prominent artist who was notable for such his works as Diablesa, El Toro, Danza humid, Trova, Pilar, El Canal, as well as the portraits of Arthur Rubinstein, Charles Boyer and those of the Dukes of Windsor.
Capuletti's works have been numerously exhibited not only in his native country but abroad as well.
