Diplomat entrepreneur journalist author
Chocano was born on May 14, 1875. His place of birth, perhaps Lima, and many of the details of his life are uncertain.
Chocano was admitted to the National University of San Marcos at the early age of 14 years.
About 1910 he traveled to Mexico, where he became an adviser to the revolutionist Pancho Villa. Later, he served as an adviser to the Guatemalan dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera. In 1920, when Cabrera was ousted, Chocano was condemned to death. However, through the intercession of the world press he was pardoned and freed, and in 1921 he returned to Peru. Shortly afterward, he killed a political adversary and fled to Chile, where he lived in obscurity. Chocano was murdered in Santiago by an unknown assailant on December 13, 1934. Much of Chocano's vigorous musical poetry deals with the problems of the Indian peoples, but the poet also felt the beauty of the heroic Hispanic tradition and frequently wrote of the conquistadors in rich, feeling, grandiose language. His writings often express his concern about the domination of the Latin countries by the political and cultural expansion of the United States. Chocano is best known for La Selva virgen (1901; "The Virgin Forest") and Alma America (1906; "The Spirit of America").
