Canadian debut publication by one of the Spanish-speaking world’s top crime-fiction writers Elena Miranda and her brother, Pablo, have lived in the same spacious Havana apartment since they were children, not knowing that a $10-million treasure in diamonds is hidden behind a tile in their bathroom. Now the son of the man who buried them there wants them, and he knows the ideal person for the job: his ruthless former comrade-in-arms during the Vietnam War. Equipped with a Spanish-speaking "wife" and Canadian passports, the vet flies to Cuba to sweet-talk his way into Elena and Pablo’s lives and get his hands on the diamonds. But Cuba has a way of confusing even the best-laid plans, and soon the treasure hunters find themselves being hunted. A complex, hard-boiled novel of betrayal, deceit, and cunning, Havana Best Friends takes place in a Cuba that tourists rarely see. Stunning plot twists rocket the story forward, but not once does the action overpower the story’s heart - the emotional lives of the people whose worlds are changed forever by these so-called best friends.

Only ninety miles of open water separate Florida from Cuba, but after decades of Communist rule, the two tropical paradises couldn’t be more different. In Havana, spymaster Victoria Valiente, head of Cuban Intelligence’s vital Miami Desk, and her computer-expert husband are tired of their sacrifices. After planning a multimillion-dollar electronic heist, they try to pull the wool over the Chief’s eyes and escape to freedom - but first they have to elude a world of espionage as cutthroat as anything from the height of the Cold War. As both governments draw out all the players - including a gardener with more abilities than just a green thumb, secret foreign operatives, the FBI, and an unsuspecting former English teacher - Victoria and her husband must try to survive in the dangerous zone between the neon streets of Miami and the crumbling facades of Havana...

In Cuba, deceit is routine, paranoia is reasonable, and everything banned thrives out of sight. Elena Miranda, a special-needs teacher, has no idea what lies behind the wall in her bathroom, nor that a ruthless Vietnam vet has come to Havana to retrieve it for his employer. The beautiful woman posing as the American vet's wife is actually with him for only one reason: Her Spanish is fluent, his is nonexistent. What they are there to do is neither an easy nor a pleasant task. Another man is also after what is behind that wall, and other problems complicate the job. Shortly after the Americans arrive, Elena's brother is murdered, and a Havana cop is assigned to the crime. Calmly but relentlessly, Captain Felix Trujillo begins to work on the murder and discovers that the dead man was hardly an upstanding citizen. He does find clues he can use, especially when he becomes aware that he is following not one but a trail of corpses. Hidden in Havana is a shocking story of betrayal and cunning, where the hunters become hunted, the best-laid plans are derailed by greed and virtue, and getting valuable treasure is far less important than getting out of Cuba alive.

Henry Reeve was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1850. At fifteen, too young to join the military, he enlisted in the Union Army as a drummer boy. Three years later, he went on an expedition to Cuba to join the Cuban insurgents fighting the Spanish Army. In his first battle, Reeve and other rebels were captured and executed by firing squad. Miraculously, the Brooklynite survived his wounds, was rescued by Cuban rebels, and joined their fight. By the time he was killed in battle, he was a brigadier general in the Liberation Army. Today almost no one in the United States knows who Henry Reeve was, but just about every Cuban knows his story and admires him. Amusingly, Reeve is known in Cuba as "the Young Englishman," because he spoke the English language. But Henry Reeve was an American, and a Brooklyn boy all the way.

(This book, penned for Cubans and perhaps some interested ...)
This book, penned for Cubans and perhaps some interested Spanish-speaking readers, was translated into English because many good, decent people living in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and others fluent in English living elsewhere, have shown respect, love and even admiration for Cuba, its people and the ordeal the island has gone through for over a century. Many are concerned about what could happen in Cuba in years ahead. To properly understand why representative democracy failed in Cuba one must unavoidably examine Cuban history. Communist failure is recounted so that readers may realize why, sooner rather than later, Cuba might experience profound political, economic and social changes. If democracy, political pluralism, respect for human rights and freedom of the press return, the majority of Cubans, all those younger than 60, will have to learn and adapt to realities about they know very little or nothing. The chapter titled The Future, tries to divulge and comment on issues that would forewarn adults about the opportunities that should be seized and the dangers that should be sidestepped.

Jose Latour was born on April 24, 1940 in Havana, Cuba.
There is no information, where Jose Latour received his education.
José Latour wrote six novels in Spanish before writing Outcast, his first English-language novel. Outcast centers on Elliot Steil, a professor of English at a Cuban college. Steil is content in Cuba, if not entirely happy; his father was an American sugar magnate who abandoned Steil and his mother shortly before the revolution.
In his next English-language novel, Havana Best Friends, Pablo, a pimp, and his sister, the beautiful and innocent Elena, live in an apartment that, unbeknownst to them, contains a secret treasure: diamonds stashed years before by corrupt supporters of Cuban military leader Fulgencio Batista's regime.
Latour's next novel, Comrades in Miami, continues the story of Outcast's Elliot Steil. In this novel, Steil works as an assistant to Reuben Scheindlin, owner of an import-export business. When Scheindlin dies, Steil becomes involved in the American investigation of Mrs. Scheindlin, and his return to Cuba turns into a covert spy mission. New characters are also weaved into this story.
He has penned Havana Best Friends (2002), Havana World Series (2003), Comrades in Miami (2005), The Faraway War, under the pseudonym Enrique Clio (2009) and Crime of Fashion (2009). In October 2012 he released as an ebook Riders of Land and Tide.
