He has previously played for União Barbarense, Rio Avenue Football Club, UD Oliveirense, Randers Football Club, Aalborg BK, Viborg FF, Molde FK, Suwon Bluewings and Busan IPark. In 2010, José Mota was the top scorer in the AFC Champions League with nine goals, though his Suwon Bluewings team only managed to reach the quarter final stage. In January 2012, José Mota signed for South Korean professional league K-League side Busan I"Park on a free transfer.
