Achievements include invention and development of coordinated Li/B coolant chemistry for operation of pressurized water reactors (PWR) to reduce the rate of activity buildup excore and thus minimize occupational radiation exposure of plant personnel. Design and development ofnuclear industry's first core deposit sampling tool. Design and in-plant operation of apparatus for sampling reactor coolant near operating temperature.
Development of heuristic model of material and activity transport by the hot coolant of an operating PWR. Determination ofthe most probable deposit thickness on PWR cores which served as guide for subsequent improvements of fuel designs and as the basis for purity specifications for PWR coolants. Demonstration of the benefits of using boric acid, fully enriched in boron-10, as chemical shim in PWR coolants.
