Four years later he earned his Master of Science degree in Physics from Florida State University. Also in 1972, Josefino was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Physics from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Comiso began his career as a scientist at Philippine Atomic Research Center in 1962. A year later he took a position of an instructor at the University of the Philippines, where he worked until 1964. In 1972, Josefino became an assistant research physicist at the University of California at Los Angeles. Then in 1973, he was appointed a research associate at the University of Virginia.
Also Comiso worked as a senior member of technical staff at Computer Sciences Corporation from 1977 to 1979. Since 1979 he has been a leading physical scientist at Goddard Space Flight Center and National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In addition, Josefino was a visiting scientist/professor at the University of the Philippines, University of Tasmania, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Chiba Universirty, Mariano Marcos University and Hadley Meteorological Institute.
Comiso is a corresponding member of the Philippine National Academy of Science and Technology, American Geophysical Union, American Physical Society, International Glaciological Society, Philippine-American Academy of Science & Engineering, Japan Society for Promotion of Science and Electromagnetics Academy.
On June 27, 1970 Josefino Comiso married Diana Parreñas Jimenez. They have three children.
