He is known mainly for his theological work Sefer haikkarim ("Book of Principles"). In this book Albo provided a criterion by which the selection of the fundamental doctrines of Judaism may be determined. The following dogmas are named by Albo: the existence of God, divine revelation, and a retributive divine justice; a number of corollaries follow. Albo borrowed his teaching from Simon ben Zemach Duran, a contemporary scholar, but some of his ideas show the influence of Averroës. Albo is considered one of the outstanding Jewish theologians. He offers a complete system of theology, in which he sometimes follows Maimonides (1135 - 1204) and sometimes Hasdai Crescas (1340 - 1410). He is said not only to have invested the Jewish religion with a philosophical foundation, but to have endowed philosophy with a preeminently religious content.
