First ambition to be a painter. At 19 he was painting life-size oil portraits and drawing on the wood for Punch and other papers. Drifted into journalism, and eventually abandoned the pencil for the pen.
Originated the popular Bystander column in the Graphic, and wrote it over eighteen years (till 1909). Art-critic Daily Graphic, 1891-1907.
