He attended the Virginia Military Institute and served as a Lieutenant in the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1865, during the American Civil War.
Career
After the war, he was a planter in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana from 1865 to 1885. He served as Chief Clerk for the New Orleans Customs House from 1866 to 1890. On July 2, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison nominated Wilkinson to serve as one of nine judges on the newly-created United States. Board of General Appraisers.
He was confirmed by the Senate on July 16, 1890, and received his commission the same day.
He served on the board in New York City, until his resignation December 15, 1899. (He was succeeded by Marion De Vries in 1900)
Wilkinson died on October 23, 1915, in Myrtle Grove, Louisiana.
