Biographical Memoirs of the Rev. J.S. Buckminster, S.C. Thacher, and John Emory Abbot: Deceased American Unitarian Minsters
(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

This book, "A sermon delivered at the interment of the Reverend William Emerson, pastor of the First Church of Christ in Boston, who died May 12, 1811, in the forty-third year of his age. no. 8", by J. S. Buckminster, is a replication of a book originally published before 1811. It has been restored by human beings, page by page, so that you may enjoy it in a form as close to the original as possible. This book was created using print-on-demand technology. Thank you for supporting classic literature.
Joseph Stevens Buckminster was an American Unitarian clergyman and author. He was an influential Unitarian preacher in Boston, Massachusetts. His preaching was also an innovation, combining the results of his critical studies and a deep interest in human affairs with enthusiasm and a freshness of point of view which drew to him eager support and great popularity.
Background
Joseph Stevens Buckminster was born on May 26, 1784 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, during his father's pastorate of the North Church in that city. He descended in the seventh generation from Thomas Buckminster of Scituate and Brookline who came to America about 1640, was the son of the Rev. Joseph Buckminster and his wife Sarah Stevens, daughter of the Rev. Benjamin Stevens of Kittery Point, New Hampshire.
Education
Educated largely at home by his father, Buckminster went to Phillips Exeter Academy at eleven, finished his preparation in a year, and in 1797 entered the sophomore class of Harvard College, where he took his first degree in 1800 at the age of sixteen.
Career
After the graduation from Harvard College, Buckminster returned to live as a tutor in the family of his relative Theodore Lyman of Boston and Waltham in 1803, where his duties left him ample time to continue his reading, both in general literature and in theology, to which he now turned.
After a year of further study, he preached his first sermon as a candidate for the ministry, in the spring of 1804, at York, Maine, and shortly afterward was called to the pulpit of the Brattle Street Church in Boston, where he was ordained and installed, January 30, 1805.
His defection from the orthodox creed had bitterly disappointed his father, but the latter nevertheless consented to preach the ordination sermon (published in Boston, 1805), a composition of unusual tenderness and pathos.
After a brilliant year in Brattle Street, Buckminster's health failed, and he went to Europe in the spring of 1806, remaining over a year.
He secured the publication of, and saw through the press, the American edition of Griesbach's Greek Testament, and he delivered the Phi Beta Kappa oration at Harvard in 1809. From this circle grew the Boston Athenæum, of which Buckminster was a founder, in 1807.
When the Dexter Lectureship on Biblical Criticism was established at Harvard in 1811, Buckminster was given the first appointment, but he had scarcely begun his preparation for these duties when death came to him in a severe epileptic attack at the parsonage on Court Street, Boston, in the twenty-eighth year of his age.
With several generations of devoted service to the church behind him, Buckminster's choice of the ministry as his profession was natural, and his association at this time with Dr. James Freeman, minister of King's Chapel in Boston, influenced his decision to break away from his orthodox inheritance and join the Unitarian movement, then well under way, although no break had yet occurred in the Congregational ranks.
Views
Buckminster's preaching was also an innovation, combining the results of his critical studies and a deep interest in human affairs with enthusiasm and a freshness of point of view which drew to him eager support and great popularity.
Membership
Buckminster was a member of the Anthology Club of Boston, a small group of literary men who met weekly to dine and discuss original contributions, which were later published in the Monthly Anthology.
Personality
At the age of sixteen, which he spent as an instructor at Exeter, he suffered the first of a series of epileptic attacks, which foreshadowed an early death.
In his later years his stature was somewhat below the medium, a defect amply compensated by his grace and dignity of carriage. Two identical Stuart portraits of Buckminster, painted about 1810, show a fine and unusually intelligent face, but betray a lack of physical strength.
