(Preface IHAVE been engaged for some twenty yean in endeav...)
Preface IHAVE been engaged for some twenty yean in endeavouring to get the people to anderetand that the Church is intended to be the great instrument for Social Reform. This little book explains vfhy I have failed. The whole witness of the CS iurch ssacraments of Equalily and Brotherhood, of the Church semancipating literature, of the Church itself as a divine Society for the promotion of Social Justice, is spoilt by the action or inaction of the chief officers of the Church in the exalted position in which they have been placed in the great Council of the Nation. They have had a splendid opportunity if they had known and missed it. Of course it is illogical on account of the crimes and follies of the Bishops to condemn the Church, which is essentially democratic and liberating in its doctrines and institutions, and which if the people were wise they would, in spite of this Hm Tnnmg episcopal record, claim and use as their own Church. An Archbishop being interviewed by one who was then a well-known labour leader, produced in answer to his hostile criticism a volume of mine from his shelves, to prove how the Church was in touch with the Democracy. But all the books of all the Christian Socialist Societies are as nothing when set against Mr. Cla3rton sterrible record. What is to be done 7whether the Bishops are to be taken away from the House of Lords or the House of Lords from the Bishops, at cmy rate a different kind of Bishop iff wanted. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from Leaders of the People, Vol. 5: Studies in De...)
Excerpt from Leaders of the People, Vol. 5: Studies in Democratic History "Let us now praise famous men and our fathers who begat us." The names of the seventeen men, here named "Leaders of the People," are for the most part familiar in our mouths as household words. Those who triumphed, like Anselm and Stephen Langton; or whose cause triumphed, like Simon of Montfort, Eliot, Pym and Hampden, are beyond any loss of fame. Those who in high place quitted themselves like men and died game (if the phrase may be permitted), as did Thomas Becket and Sir Thomas More, have, for all time, deservedly their reward. The unsuccessful rebels, FitzOsbert (called Longbeard), Wat Tyler, Jack Cade and Robert Ket, are hard put to get rid of the obloquy heaped upon them by contemporary authority; while the later rebels, equally unsuccessful, Lilburne, Winstanley, Major Cartwright and Ernest Jones, relying on the pen rather than the sword, escaped the hangman, and in so doing narrowly escaped oblivion. Good Bishop Grosseteste, living out his long life, thwarted often, but unmartyred, enjoys the reputation commonly awarded to conscientious public servants who die in harness. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
