Graduate Phillips Academy, Andover, 1857. 2 years at Yale; 2 years at Harvard, graduate 1865 (Doctor of Laws, Howard University). Studied 4 years at Andover Theological Seminary.
Licensed to preach, after 4 years in pulpit went abroad and spent 2 years chiefly in Germany and England in travel and study.
From 1875 has lectured in all English-speaking countries. Made with his wife a tour of the world as lecturer, 1880-1882. Foreign 25 years Monday lecturer to great audiences in Boston.
After lecturing tour in Australia in 1895, returned by way of Japan to America, on account of illness, but resumed Boston Monday lectures, 1900, giving his 251st lecture January 7, 1901.
