Freri, Joseph was born in February 1864 in St. Etienne, France. Son of Francis and Mathilda (Bardoz) Freri.

Ordained R.C. priest, 1887. Came to the United States, 1888. Missionary apostolic in Arizona, 1888-1896.

Professor church law and history, St. John’s Theological Seminary, Boston, 1896-1900. Director general Society for Propagation of the Faith, since 1900. Created protonotory apostolic by Pope Pius XI., April 1923.
