(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Bishop Gratry wrote this series of letters to Deschamps (spelled “Dechamps” throughout), Archbishop of Mechlin, Cardinal and Primate of Belgium. Deschamps had attacked Gratry's compatriot Dupanloup, Archbishop of Orleans, for Dupanloup's letter against Papal infallibility. Gratry wrote these as a defense of Dupanloup's thought, focusing on the question of Pope Honorius' anathema. Gratry writes in a very persuasive manner, clearly demonstrating that many of the documents used to support the Vatican I Ecumenical Council were forgeries, such as Pseudo-Isidore. He also shows that even the great Thomas Aquinas, to whom the Jesuits appealed for their theory of infallibility, was led astray by Pseudo-Isidore. These letters are fairly accessible to the layman, and constitute an interesting insight into the debate raging around 1870 concerning Papal infallibility. Gratry's humble yet firm approach is very convincing and engrossing. This book was created using OCR software, and was subsequently proof-read closely by a human. While we proof our texts carefully before selling them, occasionally errors do creep in. Please help us perfect our titles by submitting errors to corrections@pneuma-press.com. Roman numerals for chapters and Bible quotations have been updated to modern numbers. Footnotes have been converted to end notes connected by hyperlinks.

(Excerpt from The Month of Mary, Conceived Without Sin Ev...)
Excerpt from The Month of Mary, Conceived Without Sin Every age of the Church is, in a certain sense, more glorious than any of 'the ages which have preceded it. It is true that there have been special ages in which God has magnified the Church more visibly than in others, and has been pleased to illustrate it with peculiar splendor and these Special ages have by no means followed each other in chronological succession. But on the whole, the glory of the Church increases with its age. It be comes more famous by its very vicissitudes. Every trial through which it passes is a fresh illumination of its divine origin and its unearthly character. It grows more honorable by the mere force of time, because of the increased number of dangers which it has surmounted, of hostile predictions which it has belied, and of grand human institutions which it has outlived. Moreover the number of the saints in the Church triumphant multiplies yearly,. And cannot be, according to St. Paul's law of sym pathy, without in?uence on the Church militant. Thus the past, as it departs, is forever adorning the Church with beautiful monuments and interesting memorials, while the present, as it reinforces the multitudes of heaven, is forever infusing fresh vigor, joy and liberty into the body upon earth. priest professor theologian author
Auguste Joseph Alphonse Gratry was born on March 10, 1805, Lille, France.
He was educated at the Ecole Polytechnique, Paris.
Grarty was ordained priest in 1832. After a stay at Strassburg as professor of the Petit Seminaire, he was appointed director of the College Stanislas in Paris in 1842 and, in 1847, chaplain of the ficole Normale Superieure. He became vicar-general of Orleans in 1861, professor of ethics at the Sorbonne in 1862, and, on the death of Barante, a member of the French Academy in 1867, where he occupied the seat formerly held by Voltaire. Together with M. Petetot, curb of Saint Roch, he reconstituted the Oratory of the Immaculate Conception, a society of priests mainly devoted to education. Gratry was one of the principal opponents of the definition of the dogma of papal infallibility, but in this respect he submitted to the authority of the Vatican Council.
His chief works are: De la connaissance de Dieu, opposing Positivism (1855); La Logique (1856); Les Sources, conseils pour la conduile de Vespril (1861 - 1862): La Philosophie du credo (1861); Commenlaire sur Vevangile de Saint Matthieu (1863); Jesus-Christ, lettres a M. Renan (1864); Les Sophistes et la critique (in controversy with E. Vacherot) (1864); La Morale et la loi de Vhistoire, setting forth his social views (1868); Mgr. l'évêque d'Orléans et Mgr. l'archevêque de Malines (1869), containing a clear exposition of the historical arguments against the doctrine of papal infallibility.
