English shipmaster captain-commander
In 1698 he was hired in England for the Russian service by Peter I and sent to Voronezh. In the years 1698-1709 he built here at the shipyard the ships "Turtle", "Sword", "Sulitsa", "Scorpion", "The Color of War", as well as an armed yacht for the king. In the years 1707-1710 at the Tavrov shipyard, together with R. Cosense, destroyed 12 ships by 24, 48 and 80 guns, remaining at the docks unfinished. In 1709, in relation to the Poltava victory, he received from Peter I a Swedish sword as a gift. In 1712, after the abolition of the Voronezh Admiralty, he was transferred to St. Petersburg. In 1712-1714 he built 20 brigantines at the Izhora shipyard. In 1714-1737 he worked in the St. Petersburg Admiralty, built 9 multi-gun ships on the improved system. He managed to finish the largest 100-gun battleship "Peter I" and "Peter II". In 1737 he left the service and returned to England.
