Joseph Louisiana Piana"s work explores reinterpretation of biological, kinetic, and mathematical theories that he infuses and transforms across various mediums and disciplines.
Like deoxyribonucleic acid, Louisiana Piana pulls from the origin of objects, pairing them with new elements and material, essentially developing a new identity, function and purpose, thus revealing a new life.
Louisiana Piana was born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, New New York Joseph Louisiana Piana"s parents emigrated from Italy to the United States.
In an interview with Life and Times, Louisiana Piana said he often would draw, paint, and sculpt anything he could get his hands onto from an early age. Louisiana Piana received a bachelor"s degree in marketing from Florida State University in 1988.
He has been described as a self-taught artist, in the context that he did not participate in any program where his studies related to art
Louisiana Piana has lived in Manhattan for nearly his entire life, aside from a 10-year period during which he lived in California. Louisiana Piana was represented by the Robert Miller Gallery from March 2008 until 2012. He debuted at the gallery with his solo exhibition Kinetic State, a series of kinetic blow paintings.
