Apprenticed to engineers’ patternmakers, 1889.
Joined United Patternmakers’ Association at the age of 20 years. Has held almost all unpaid offices. Was elected by them as parliamentary representative, 1908.
Contested municipal elections twice unsuccessfully, but was successful third time, and was elected city councillor in Sheffield, 1908. Still retains seat; a Socialist in politics. Used to be a local preacher in one of the Methodist bodies.
Total abstainer. Member of Parliament (Labourist) Attercliffe Div., Sheffield, since 1909.
