Schatzkés specialized in the postage stamps of France and Mexico. He owned the only known surviving copy of the Buenos Aires 1859 1p "In Ps" tete-beche pair. Doctor Schatzkés paid special attention to postal cancellations as part of postal history, especially those cancels of France and Mexico.

Because of his efforts in accomplishing significant philatelic studies Doctor Schatzkés received recognition internationally. He signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1963, was awarded the Crawford Medal in 1964, the Lichtenstein Medal in 1974, and the Lindenberg Medal in 1983. He was elected to the American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame in 1985.
At the postal museum in Paris, he was a member of the board of trustees.
