Joseph Shippen, American lawyer.


Shippen, Joseph was born on September 10, 1839 in Meadville, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Judge Henry and Elizabeth Wallis (Evans) Shippen.


Brother of Rush Rhees S. Bachelor of Arts, Harvard, 1860, A.M., 1867.


Began study of law at Meadville, 1860. Admitted to Pennsylvania bar, 1862, Supreme Court of the United States, 1878. Commissioned by state of Pennsylvania to visit, relieve and report as to sick and wounded Pennsylvania soldiers in Civil War.

Agent and secretary United States Sanitary Common for Western Pennsylvania, at Pittsburgh. Taught in high school, Worcester, Massachusetts, 1863-1864. Master in chancery United States Circuit Court, Eastern District of Missouri, 1872-1879.

Trustee Meadville Theological School (1 year instructor and lecturer). President Western Unitarian Conference, Pacific Coast Unitarian Conference. Chairman general conference committee of local improvement clubs of Seattle.

President Western Federation of Improvement Clubs. Delaware 16th International Peace Congress, Munich, 1907. Delegate Lake Mohonk International Peace Conference.


Married Elizabeth Jones Winslow. Married second, Marian Virginia Williamson, November 29, 1884 (died 1906).
