Practiced medicine in Michigan and Wisconsin, 1852-1854. Editor Whitewater (Wisconsin) Gazette, 1854-1856, Waukesha (Wisconsin) Republic, 1857. Practiced law, Rochester, Minnesota, 1858-1864.

Postmaster Rochester, 1861-1864. Captain commissary 1st div. 16th corps; part owner and later owner and editor Rochester (Minnesota) Post till 1899.

State senator, 1869-1870. Register United States Land Office at Jackson and Worthington, Minnesota, 1874-1875. United States consul at Edinburgh, 1881-1883.

Consul-general at Calcutta, 1884, at Shanghai, 1889-1893. Judge of probate, 1897-1903. Commander Custer Post, G.A.R., 3 terms.

Inspector state department G.A.R., 1 term. Judge advocate same, 1 term. President Minnesota Editorial Association, 1868-1869, Minnesota Republican Press Association, 1896-1897.
