Breckinridge, Joseph Cabell was born on January 14, 1842 in Baltimore. Son of Review Robert Jefferson Breckinridge.
Attended Centre College, Kentucky, and University of Virginia.
Entered army, 1861, General Nelson’s and General Thomas’ staffs. Commanded light battery F, 2d Artillery, at Atlanta. Appointed Second lieutenant 2d Artillery, April 14, 1862, “for gallantry at Mill Springs, Kentucky”.
Promoted through grades to major general, United States Army, April 11, 1903. Bvtd.: captain, July 22, 1864, “for gallant and meritorious services in battle before Atlanta, Georgia.”. Major, March 13, 1865, for same during the war.
Major general vols., 1898, in Santiago campaign. Horse shot under him July 2, 1898. Commanded separate army of 44,000 men at Chickamauga, Georgia, August, 1898.
Inspector general United States of America, 1889-1904. Retired at own request after 40 years’ service, April 12, 1903. Traveled throughout Europe and southeastern and western Asia and all over United States Delaware of General Assembly Presbyterian Church in America to Pan Presbyterian Alliance Conference, Liverpool, 1904.
