Otis, Joseph Edward was born on March 5, 1867 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Son of Joseph Edward and Maria (Taylor) Otis.


Educated Harvard School, Chicago, Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, and Sheffield Scientific School (Yale). Doctor of Laws, Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois, 1930.


Died in France, 1918), Stuart Huntington, Raymond (deceased), Emily Huntington (Mistress Nathaniel A. Owings). Began in real estate business. 1889; one of organizers and president of the Great Western Tin Plate Company, Joliet, Illinois (sold to American Tin Plate Company, 1897).

Member firm Otis, Wilcox & Company, stock brokers, 1897, business changed to private banking and consolidated with Western State Bank. 1902, under title of Western Trust & Savings Bank, of which was president until 1911, when it consolidated with Central Trust Company of Illinois. Vice president of latter and acting president, 1917-1922. president, 1922-1929, Chairman of the Board, 1929-1931.

Chairman of the Board and director Industrial National Bank of Chicago, 1921 until merger with Chicago Terminal National Bank under name Chicago National Bank of which is now honorary board chairman. Retired director A.,T.&San Francisco Railway. Director Pure Oil Corporation, Chicago Daily News.
