After 4 years in architect’s office, realised that all best art was architectural and that the architect must be an artist. Accordingly studied drawing and carving. Visited France and Italy to study ancient monuments of art.
Much influenced by Ruskin. Became interested in Tempera Painting in Italy, 1883. Practised this art with one interval till present time as being the most appropriate for decorative or monumental as opposed to portable art.
Always a disciple of XIV. and XV. century Italians. Received great help from Sir William Richmond, and later from Sir Edward Burne-Jones. Designer of furniture and needlework.
Member of Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, Society of Painters in Tempera, and Birmingham Royal Society of Artists. Artist and Designer.
