Ordained priest R. C. Church, 1904. Assistant pastor Belleville (Illinois) Cathedral, 1907-1909. Pastor and chancellor Belleville diocese, 1909-1930.

Consecrated Bishop of Peoria, June 17, 1930. Appointed assistant at the Pontifical Throne, November 16, 1950. Named Archbishop, Ad Personam, June 27, 1951.

Chairman Governor Horner’s Common for Study of Prison Problems. Pres, National Catholic Rural Life Conference, since 1943.
