Even a vulgar mind, I should think, a vagrant and a tramp, must feel sometimes a certain wonder and luxury at finding himself floated, without any exertion of his own, on this great sea of Humanity that laps us all about, and is so ready to hold us up if we begin to sink. Happily, not all or most of us can be tramps, and so put Humanity to too severe a test. But think of Very literal pains; for when lie died, his skin, from self-flagellation, was one sore from head to foot. He had identified his life so completely with his work! and the task was but hardly begun, even then growing larger and harder upon his hands. It is the fallacy of a strong heart and living conscience that God cannot spare his laborers from their task; that the work is theirs, not His; that they are responsible for the result as well as for the deed. In those fifteen THE END. 113 years of strife, had the bondage of bigotry and error been much loosened?--had the chains of the slave grown any lighter?--had the curse of intemperance and licentiousness, the dishonesties and inhumanities of trade, the grief of hopeless poverty, been lessened in the community he lived in and labored for? Excerpt from Our Liberal Movement: In Theology Chiefly as Shown in Recollections of the History of Unitarianism in New England Unitarianism in Ne Course England Being a Closing Course of Lectures Given in the Harvard Divinity School These circumstances will explain, if they do not justify, a more personal tone in these Lectures than would belong to a purely historical or critical review. In fact, the value of the volume, if it has any, turns mainly on its being, in good part, made up of reminiscences and personal testimony. It is, besides, in some sense the final link in a series, of which "Hebrew Men and Times" makes the first, and the third, under the title "The Middle Age," is now in press. I will only add, that some passages may perhaps be recognized as having appeared here and there in print. In particular, most of the article on Unitarianism in a pamphlet entitled "Three Phases of Modern Theology" has been included here; and the Lecture on "The Gospel of Liberalism" is substantially the same with the Address to the Alumni of this School delivered in 1880. By the kindness of Dr. Hedge I am permitted to add in the form of an Appendix, with some revision and addition by his hand, his recent Memorial Address on Bellows and Emerson. One is the indirect effect of the growth of positive science, first interpreted by Bacon, of which I have not spoken here, because it seemed best to deal only with that which was spontaneously developed within the sphere of pure thought itself. The other, which is here briefly traced, is the impulse given to the movement by a series of very vigorous, able, and independent thinkers,--men who, not content with the accepted theories, reasoned in their own way upon the data given them in current dogma, until one by one the old spectres of metaphysics were laid; and, without wishing or even suspecting it, men found themselves walking together upon the plain ground of fact. This result constitutes what we may call the positive side of the Kantian method, as distinct from the critical or negative. It is, in fact, an emancipation of the intellect in the direction of pure thought, quite See below, The Reign of Law. as much as in the direction of positive science. For it is to be observed that the most complete and vital systems of speculative philosophy--those which give best satisfaction to abstract thinkers, and claim highest authority as interpreters of human thought--belong to the century which has followed the great work of Kant, and are part of the movement initiated by him. Excerpt from An Historical Sketch of the Unitarian Movement: Since the Reformation The task attempted here is, first, to give, within the limits assigned, a history of the religious movement known as "Unitarian" sufficiently broad and complete for the general reader; and second, to furnish a list of authorities adequate for the uses of the special student. The latter object, it is hoped, has been effected by ample references in the margin. A formal bibliography, particularly of individual lives, which are very numerous, might be extended to any length, and might hardly justify the space it would require. Besides, the value of this sketch, such as it is, depends - in the latter part especially - on its being a record of personal recollections, judgments, or impressions, left by near sixty years during which I have been a student or observer, and more than fifty while I have been, in a way, a laborer, in this field. In what is said of the incidents and actors since the movement of thought among us commonly dated between 1835 and! 840, every name is one I recall, gratefully, as that of a teacher, associate, or friend. Most of these are passed away. Of the living, only Furness and Martineau have been included; and these, in their advanced and venerated old age, already belong to history.
