Career

Instructor, later assistant professor Duke University, 1960-1964. Visiting assistant professor University California, Riverside, 1964-1965. Associate professor, then professor State University of New York, Buffalo, 1965-1972.

Professor English University of California at Los Angeles, from 1973. Faculty School of Criticism and Theory, Northwestern University, summer 1981. Director Center for Critical Studies and the Human Sciences, University of California at Los Angeles, from 1988.

Visiting Longstreet professor Emory University, 1990.
