Studied at Gram. School, Lostwithiel, Cornwall.
Appointed to Ordnance Department, 1838. Served in Sydney, 1838-1847. Then at Wellington and Auckland, New Zealand.
Served in Wars of 1847-1848 and 1860-1866.
Was presented with a handsome piece of plate by the inhabitants of Wellington for his services in extinguishing a fire which threatened the destruction of the business part of the city. Also for saving the life of a girl from drowning in the harbour.
Returned to England, 1870, and appointed to charge of Gun Wharf at Chatham. Then War Office, Dover, and Aldershot.
Retired after more than 42 years" service.
Founder and Secretary of the “ Hamley Gun Club,” and Swimming Bath, Auckland, New Zealand. Commissary - General with honorary rank of MajorGen. in the Army.

Spouse 1849, Martha (daughter 1895),daughter of late John Morgan of Bristol.
